The Usual Suspects

Rodents come in all shapes and sizes in New England. They each have their own particular strategies for wreaking havoc on homes, but these animals are characterized by one common characteristic: their oversized teeth. They have a single pair of incisors in their upper and lower jaws. Chances are, you’ve likely come face-to-face with New England’s most common culprits: mice and rats.

What Makes Rodents Risky

Rodents are prime suspects for carrying diseases, many of which can be spread to humans and pets—either directly through contact with feces, urine, saliva, and bites or indirectly via ticks, mites, and fleas.

It’s what makes trapping and excluding household rodents from homes so crucial. An unchecked rodent problem, the longer it goes unresolved, could increase the risk of several different diseases. Mice & rats alone are known to carry over 35 diseases according to the CDC!

The Degrees of Rodent Damage

The health risks alone make rodents a danger to have in homes—but on top of that, they are also menaces with a knack for destruction. Buildings, crops, and food are all fair game for rodents once they get close enough. The nests they build inside walls and insulated areas, for example, could cause structural damage.

Rodents also chew just about anything, which could lead to food contamination or even house fires—they have been known to gnaw on wires and cause short circuits.
