That’s because more people get sick and die as a result of mosquito bites each year than all other animal attacks combined. Mosquitoes carry and spread diseases such as Zika, West Nile, dengue fever, and malaria, as well as regional viruses—like the one for eastern equine encephalitis.

Ticks Carry A Special Weapon

Ticks bite humans far less frequently, but they’re also responsible for the spread of a particularly frightening germ: Lyme disease. Left untreated, Lyme disease can result in neurological and cardiac symptoms and, in extreme cases, death. Besides Lyme disease, ticks can also carry Rocky Mountain spotted fever, anaplasmosis, and many more. 

These Biters Aren’t Choosy About Their Dwellings

Ticks are known to take up residence anywhere—from tall grasses to high above the ground in trees around your property. Mosquitos, too, will take advantage of ideal conditions wherever they can find them, as long as there is at least an inch of standing water to lay their eggs in.
