Moles

Spring is here and it’s time to start enjoying your yard and being outdoors, finally!  It’s been a long winter and you are actually looking forward to mowing and tending to the garden.  Unfortunately, you may not be the only one enjoying the backyard. You may have a pest problem if you are asking,   “What are those round, symmetrical, volcano-looking mounds in the grass?”  Could it be a fox, bunnies, squirrels?  Spring means breeding season for a number of animals and the mounds may be the work of a lawn pest known as the mole.

Moles are burrowing insectivores. They grow to be 6 to 8 inches long and have gray to black velvety fur, slender hairless snouts, and small eyes and ears. Moles’ large front feet have long claws that dig much like a hoe. Moles live underground and surface only occasionally. Their cylindrical bodies and powerful front claws are ideal for digging. They almost “swim” through dirt. Moles create a complex network of interconnected chambers by burrowing both deep and close to the surface, where they often leave visible ridges. Moles build new feeding tunnels constantly and may not use the same one twice. You may find entry and exit mounds all over your lawn if they have decided your yard is idea for their needs.

Moles feed on insects and insect larvae, but their preferred dinner includes earthworms and white grubs. Given a choice, moles pick moist, sandy loam soils over dry, heavy clay soils. They are most active during warm, wet months, although they live underground year-round. The primary problem with moles is the tunnels. They can leave ridged tunnels all over a lawn. They also leave large dirt molehills in several areas of the territory. They are not necessarily dangerous, but can ruin your nice landscaping or yard.

Homeowners sometimes mistake mole tunnels for those made by pocket gophers, small rodents that also tunnel underground. The questions that most homeowners ask include: how do I know what this animal is, (if it spends most of its day underground) and how do I get rid of it? While there are no magic spray or device that you can use to make them go away, Pest-End can help you identify and remove the mole from your property. Contact Pest-End to help you identify what is making the mess of your yard and garden and then we will work with you on a method to remove the pest from your yard.
